Happy New Year 2012

December 28, 2011

At last, having a rest for a few days – the busiest run up to Christmas ever and missed wishing you all a Happy Christmas so, instead, I am here to wish you all a very Happy New Year.

My eldest Grandson (20yr old) and his girlfriend came up from London to stay with me in October 2011 to help us deal with the mass of keepsake box orders which were coming in for delivery prior to Christmas. I don’t think they knew how busy it was going to be although, they worked hard and we couldn’t have done it without them. They are back to London for the New Year celebrations at the moment and who knows what will happen when they get back. Orders are already piling in although, officially, we do not start processing orders until 3rd January 2012.

I was just having a few thoughts about what changes we should make for 2012. Although I am cautious about expanding the business too quickly, it appears that the time has come to really think about what to do next. Turnover has doubled over the past year and is increasing month on month. How do you stop the business growing – perhaps I would prefer that it didn’t grow at all and that it just stayed at a level that we could cope with.

There are so many questions to answer:-
How many employees do I need to engage over the next year based on the increase in sales over the past 12 months?
Do I need to move to larger premises?
Should I start a new business not so labour intensive.
Should I expand my range of keepsake boxes or reduce my range of keepsake boxes?
Can I make things simpler, therefore, saving time.
All product prices will have to be increased early in 2012 as we can no longer absorb the increases in raw materials received from our suppliers during 2011.

There have been countless options for me to expand the business over the past year with enquiries from shops, services, websites all wanting to sell my products on a commission basis although I have had no time to phone them back or organise an affiliate programme.

Our stocks of wooden keepsake and memory boxes have depleted due to the heavy demand over the past three to four months and re-stocking has always been a problem with our current suppliers. The Oak Boxes are always a very popular choice at Christmas and, with very few left, our local supplier cannot keep up with our demand.

Our jumbo Pine Storage Boxes are used for children’s toys, girls pretty keepsake boxes, bereavement boxes and many other uses and the 100’s we had in stock are now down to only a few. When the last few have gone they might not be back in stock until the end of January 2012.

We stock various colours in our limewood keepsake and memory boxes and many of the sizes and colours are currently out of stock. These will be replenished very soon as baby keepsake boxes are in demand all the year round.

Many of our customers now have two or three children and it is so lovely to hear from them again and again when re-ordering the baby boxes for their new offspring.

Christmas is always a busy time for Weddings although not as busy as the spring and summer – so white and ivory Wedding boxes are the colours which must be stocked up for the rest of the year.

We know 2012 will be an excellent year for the business and we are proud that we managed to despatch, in time, every box ordered for Christmas. We would have loved to see those happy faces on Christmas morning when the recipients opened their presents of a personalised keepsake box. Such a lovely way to show a special person in your life how much they mean to you.
